Background Information
One of the most endangered animals in the world, Amur Leopards live in the temperate forests of the Russian Far East. Courtesy of the World Wildlife Foundation.
Only thirty Amur Leopards exist in the wild in the entire world. Also known as Far East Leopards, Manchurian Leopards, and Korean Leopards, Amur Leopards were found throughout northeastern ("Manchurian") China, Russia, and the Korean Peninsula. But deforestation, degradation, and poaching have been constant threats to Amur Leopards, decreasing their population and habitat drastically. Now, these rare animals can only be found in the Southwest Primorye province in the Russian Far East and few in the Heilongjiang Province and the Jilin Province in North East China.
Only a small strip of in the Russian Far East and China now belongs to the territory of the Amur Leopard. Photo source the Amur Leopard and Tiger Alliance.
